Genesis — Introduction — Where the Story Starts
The book of beginnings
Genesis is the headwaters. Its Hebrew name is simply Bereshith, "In the beginning" — its very first word — and almost everything the rest of Scripture assumes is first given here: God, the world, humankind, the image of God, marriage, work, rest, sin, death, and the first promise of a rescuer. To read Genesis is to stand at the source of the whole story; every river downstream — exodus, covenant, kingdom, cross, new creation — is fed from these fifty chapters. Read it slowly. We are watching the world, and the plan of redemption, begin.
How to read chapter one
Before the first argument we must settle the first question: what kind of writing is this? Genesis 1 is not a laboratory report and never pretends to be. It is a true account of the world's origin told in exalted, cadenced prose — measured refrains, a deliberate architecture of forming and then filling, the sevenfold "and it was good." We will honor it as exactly that. It tells us, with unmatched authority, who made the world and whose it is; it does not hand us the mechanism or the timetable. On the "how" and the "when" — the length of the days, the age of the earth — faithful Reformed readers have long and honestly differed, and we hold those questions with an open hand. What Genesis 1 presses on us is not physics but worship: one God, no rivals, speaking a good world into being by his word and crowning it with his own image.
Real dust, a real fall
The openness of chapter 1 about how God made the world does not dissolve the history of chapters 2 and 3. Genesis means us to meet a real first man and woman, a real garden, a single real command, and a real catastrophe when that command is broken. The whole New Testament rests its weight here: Paul's gospel runs on "one man," Adam, through whom sin and death entered the world, answered by "one man," Jesus Christ, through whom come grace and life. Lose the historical Adam and the last Adam has nothing to undo. So we read the fall as what happened, not merely as a picture of what happens — even as it is also, achingly, the story of every one of us.
The scarlet thread
And already, in the very ashes of the fall, the book plants its hope. To the serpent God promises that a seed of the woman will one day crush its head (3:15) — the church has called it the protoevangelium, the first gospel — and from that moment Genesis becomes the story of a promised offspring, a line traced with almost stubborn care through Seth and Noah and Shem down to Abraham, to whom God swears that in his seed "all the families of the earth shall be blessed." The genealogies we are tempted to skim are the thread itself; they are the Bible keeping its eye, generation by generation, on the One who is coming.
How it moves
Genesis falls into two great movements. Chapters 1–11 are the primeval history — creation, the fall, the first murder, the flood, Babel — the story of the whole human race, and of how good beginnings keep bending toward ruin. Then at chapter 12 the lens narrows to a single family: the patriarchs, Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and Joseph (12–50), through whom God binds himself by covenant to a people who will bless the world. The book that opens with a cosmos ends with a coffin in Egypt — Joseph's bones, and a promise still outstanding — the whole story leaning forward, waiting for a deliverance it cannot yet see.
Where it points
We read every book of the Bible looking for Christ, and Genesis hands him to us again and again: the Word who was "in the beginning," through whom all things were made; the last Adam who keeps the trust the first one broke; the seed of the woman who takes the serpent's strike into his own heel; the better blood than Abel's; the true and greater Isaac carrying the wood up the mountain; the Joseph who is betrayed by his brothers and yet tells them, "you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good." Genesis is not shy about the darkness — the murders, the deceptions, the long list of graves — but unlike Ecclesiastes it does not hold the light back; it lets the promise shine from the first page. Here is where the story starts. And here, already, is the One it is all about.
